Snot Monsters

Both girls have nasty colds right now. We’re living in snot hell. I think that once they get over this I will start forcing them to wear gasmasks to playgroups.
Of course they get stricken with the icks just at the time we need to be taking our Christmas photos. Not to mention that Kaelin took a spill on the driveway and has a huge scab on her forehead. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like two kids in Santa hats covered in scabs and snot. Sheesh.

What's Been Going On

I have been busy the past few weeks working on a custom order for some canvas pieces for a mom of triplets. I am close to completing them so my brain is slowly coming back from lala land. I have decided that once I get my business up and running, custom orders will require a much higher price! I’m exhausted.

We have been up to the same old stuff .. playdates .. shopping for cute winter clothes (which is suprisingly hard .. of course, I am the pickiest momma on the planet!) .. learning new words … so on and so forth.

I hosted a playgroup for Koalamommas a few weeks ago. A mom came with a variety of different slings and wraps and baby carriers and explained the pros and cons of each. I LOVE wearing the girls in my sling but had been getting some shoulder pain from it .. turns out all I needed to do was shift them a little bit and problem solved. Also learned that if we had only one baby I would be using a different carrier .. but since I can’t do it that often I decided it wasn’t worth the money. Maybe with number three … if there IS a number three!! (Oh, I hope there’s a number three!!) Actually hosting the group (which was mostly friends) was my way of getting out of travelling to one of the weekly meetings to have my question answered. Sneaky sneaky. We had fun .. but of course a few days later the girls got sick … always happens when mommy tries to socialize! The girls were covered in tiny red spots and were really grumpy for two days .. turns out it was just some weird virus …
Unfortunately, Reese has gotten Transient Synovitus as a result .. basically that’s just some hip pain due to the virus that she had a week ago .. poor little thing was screaming every time she tried to stand. Not fun for a mommy to have to watch that. She’s better now, thanks to the miracle of Motrin. If she is not better completely by Thursday, we’ll be taking her in for xrays to be sure there isn’t a fracture somewhere. I think she’ll be fine though … seems SO much better today and is walking .. albeit a little weird .. but at least she’s on her feet!

Kaelin had a moment of greatness today. She was looking at a picture book.. giggling at the dog on the page. I said, “dog” .. and she looked up at me and said it right back. “Dog!” Okay .. no real big deal there .. she is our big talker so that didn’t suprise me .. what DID though was that after she said it, she made the sign for dog! (three pats on her leg) I haven’t shown her that sign for weeks! Guess she WAS paying attention all those times I did it .. who knew?! Completely threw me for a loop. I will be contacting MENSA in the morning.
I suppose there’s a parenting lesson in there .. those little boogers are paying attention to everything you do even when it seems that they are ignoring you .. so watch your step! (and your mouth while you’re at it!)

We have walkers! (Lord, help us)

The girls have been testing out the whole walking thing for months now. A little here, a little there. They have now decided that it’s pretty cool and spend more time walking than crawling. They look like drunk little old men wobbling around but they’re getting pretty good at it!

Kaelin .. very excited to be upright

Yesterday we made it out to Layne's (My sister's daughter) last soccer game of the season. It was so much fun watching the little ones going after the ball. I can't wait to fulfill my role as crazed soccer mom! Suddenly I'm no longer musing about how quickly they grow up .. now I just want them to hurry up so we can go shopping for cleats!

Emily and Cooper (Katie's son), Katie and Reese, me and Kaelin (Layne refused to be in the picture .. too tuckered out from the big game I suppose)

We decided not to take the girls trick or treating last night .. I didn't want all of that tempting candy in the house!! Instead, we took the girls over to our next door neighbors yard, where they had set up a table with wine, crackers and veggies.. and we all just let the kids come and get candy from there. It was a lot of fun and the girls loved seeing all of the big kids in their costumes. Not a bad way to spend a night!
Mommy got all depressed at night when we put the girls in their cribs wide awake and they didn't make a peep for the rest of the night. Funny how I have prayed for the day this would happen .. and then when it does I go into "my babies don't need me anymore" mode. They looked like such big girls with their heads on their pillows, blanket tucked under their arms and clutching their stuffed animals. Too much. Why does it go by so fast?

Reese's first taste of Haloween candy!

Kaelin's reaction to seeing Dr Phil on tv

What happens when you leave twins alone in a room together ... one cracks an escape plan .. pushes a box to the gate .. the other cimbs on up and gets ready to break free over the baby gate! (ugh)

First Halloween Party

The girls went to their first Halloween party tonight. I had originally planned on making their costumes myself, but I decided to save my ideas for next year when the girls are a little older. So at the last minute we managed to find these .. which fit their personalities to a T at the moment. We think they look pretty cute.

They are going to another party tomorrow night too (such popular kiddos). That one will be with all of their playgroup friends so they will certainly have a lot of fun! We’ll post pics from that tomorrow!
[edit .. we forgot our camera for that party .. so no pics .. good job mom and dad]

Pumpkin Patch

We took a trip to a Pumpkin Patch with Grandma and Grampa during their visit. The girls loved all of the animals that were wandering around. As you can see from the above pic, Reese made fast friends with the cat that was hanging around! So cute ..

Long Time Gone

My computer has been acting up for the past month … hard to get anything done… it finally gave out completely a few weeks back and we had to send it off for repairs.
SO .. that’s why I have been so remiss in updating. Apologies all around.
I have it back now so I’ll be posting lots in the upcoming weeks to catch everyone up!

For those of you not in the loop ….
I have recently reconnected with my sisters, Katie and Emily. We haven’t seen each other in YEARS. We have all searched for one another from time to time to no avail. Through the magic of the internet we have now found each other. Suprisingly, we are all now living in the same area, about 10 minutes away. Isn’t that always the way it happens?
I will spare everyone the dramatics .. but will say that I am beyond thrilled. So full of love. My big sister has two kids of her own, Layne who is a three year old girl, and Cooper, who is an 8 month old boy. Today she brought Cooper over to play with the girls while Layne was in school. So much fun. The girls actually cried and pointed to the front door when they left .. which NEVER happens! We are looking forward to many playdates and dinners with their new cousins! And I look forward to spoiling my new niece and nephew absolutely rotten.

It's Kaelin's Turn

Well, turns out Reese wasn’t the only one exposed to the ickies. Kaelin got it a day later .. now she is one miserable little girl. Reese, thankfully, is better.
Ah, the joys of playgroups.

Why is it always her????

Since day 1, poor little Reese has been given the short end of the stick. She had to endure more stuff in the NICU, dealt with horrible reflux, awful congestion for MONTHS .. and so many other set backs. It’s always her suffering through something.

She, once again, has something going on with her at the moment ..
She has had diarrhea (excuse me .. but this IS a baby blog after all .. get over it people) for the past two days and now has one killer diaper rash because of it. Poor little thing is in so much pain that she has been crying on and off all day. It’s killing me.
I’m wondering if she may have a lactose intolerance issue since we have just started giving her more whole milk. Great. That’ll be fun to deal with.
So far we have taken her off of the milk completely and have been pumping her full of water, bananas, rice, toast, and applesauce. Of course, she has very little patience for eating .. but we are trying to get in her what we can.
I have a feeling that we’ll be getting up to change her about every hour or so to try and keep her dry.
It’s going to be a long night.
We need some healthy, happy baby butt prayers here.

Look Out World!!

Last night Reese took two steps by herself!! She was coming to me to get a bite of banana and pushed up on my leg, let go, and then took two steps to get closer. Here’s hoping Kaelin waits for Reese to get the hang of it before she decides to give it a go. One wobbly, clumsy baby I can handle .. the thought of two makes me curl up in the fetal position and cry.
Let the games begin!

White Trash Family

What started out as a plan to play with some water ended up being the most white trash day on the front lawn. Surely the neighbors were thrilled.
The girls decided that just having their hands in the water just wasn't fun enough .. so in the tub they went!

Welcome to the World

On September 14th, little Grant Russell made his appearance into the world. Congratulations Miyoung and Alex .. and love to all of you. So, so much love. We are all so overwhelmed with joy for you.
Enjoy this new chapter as a family.
(I would write more, but by God I can’t see the keyboard through the tears!)

Each of the girls have just realized that the other baby in the room is fun to play with.

It has always amazed me that they LOVE meeting up with their little friends and get so excited with other babies, yet never really seemed to pay any attention to the one that is constantly by their side! They laugh and giggle with their friends, at babies in magazines; on tv …. but the whole “I have sister here next to me” never really amused them. Funny how that works.

For the past two weeks, every now and then I’ll catch them imitating each other … a big game seems to be picking up two balls and knocking them together at the same time. Big fun.

Last night David and I took the girls out to sit on the front lawn and while we were there a few neighbors came to hang out (we just love our neighborhood!) and out of nowhere we hear Kaelin letting out full belly laughs. We looked up and she and Reese were sitting facing each other clapping their hands and laughing at one another. It was adorable. They were just looking at each others faces and giggling and talking and laughing. It’s times like those that you live for with twins .. or siblings as well I suppose. I can’t wait to see how they enjoy each other in the years to come. How awesome is it to enter the world with your best friend by your side?!!?

Pretty awesome indeed.

Where Has The Time Gone?

Life has been busy with two babies who are cruising, climbing, and making new friends. Every night I think, “I need to update the blog”, but then opt for bed instead. Terrible.
We have been busy, busy, BUSY! So lets see what everyone has missed out on ….

We celebrated the girls first “birth”day .. yes, I use quotes since they were 10 weeks early, on August 20th. We had a small gathering of family and left it at that … for now. Mama thinks that the girls deserve a blowout in November .. when their original due date would have been had I not built Reese a bum cord! Bad mom. If anyone deserves two days of gifts, friends, and frosting it’s these two!
The girls loved their birthday cupcakes and made the obligatory mess with them. So much fun. We were suprised to see that they seemed to know just what to do with all of their wrapped presents and tore into each one like pros. It was an impressive display of utter excitement and greed! Grandma and Grandpa up in NY got to be a part of the celebration via webcam .. gotta love the world we’re living in!

Reese is now quite the little monkey. She spends 95% of the day suspended from some object in the house. Let me tell ya .. I’m thrilled by this .. (does sarcasm come through in type?)
Her favorite thing to do is climb up the highchair, feet on the wheels, hands on the tray, and bend backwards to look at the world upside down. Momma LOVES to see that little head dangling inches away from the hardwoods. Amazingly, she has never fallen. (Knock on wood)
She also loves to climb the baby gates that confine her. She is getting so close to the top that a few moms who have been here for playgroups have made the suggestion of getting second gates to screw in above the other ones. Great. That will certainly make the house look nice.
Another favorite activity is crawling in and through our coffee table, which has a small shelf under the top for storage. She’ll spend an hour crawling in … through … and out … over and over again. I don’t get it .. but hey, if it entertains her (and keeps her away from the highchair!) I’m game to watch.
She can now stand on her own but seems hesitant to take those first few steps. You can see in her eyes that she’s thinking about it, but she wimps out each time. I’m sure she’ll do it any day.

Kaelin has been very interested lately in learning new words. I guess all the time Reese spends imitating Richard Petty, zooming around the room nonstop gives Kaelin a few quiet moments to study her picture books and work with me. (Reese has no time for that kind of stuff yet .. to much to explore) So far she can identify and say cat (at), baby, hi, more (ma), eyes, ouch (outh), and we got a bye bye out of her tonight. She can also make the signs for more and ball. She crawls around all day saying “me, me, me …..” Not sure what that means .. but I’m choosing to believe it means something other than that she’s a completely self centered little princess that thinks the world revolves around her! Pray for us.

The girls LOVE that Daddy works from home and get so excited when he comes for visits during the day. They throw down whatever they are playing with and crawl super fast to climb up him. So cute.

The girls are being introduced to cow milk and soy milk (I give them soy juice actually .. a little better in the protein, nutrition department than plain juice in my opinion) .. drink it exclusively at one feeding, the others they get a mixture of formula and milk. So far so good. They are doing great with their solids and get excited when they are put into their highchairs to see what goodies await. So far, their absolute favorite thing is organic banana waffles with peanut butter. They still love their tofu and fruit breakfasts and Yobaby yogurt too.

And then of course are the Cheerios. I had to ask our pediatrician if there was actually such a thing as too many Cheerios. I swear they eat them all day. If I let them, I guarantee they could polish off a large box a week. It’s insane. Thank goodness Dr. Hassel said it wasn’t a problem because those Cheerios make for happy, quiet babies when they are hidden in places around the room … which makes for a happy, sane momma!
We may have to buy some stock in that company.

Some might call me crazy

I had a lot of plans for raising my baby when I first got pregnant. Of course, most of that went out the window when we found out that we were having TWO babies. All we heard from people was how hard it was going to be .. how crazy around here .. how exhausting. So I just kind of stopped thinking of how life would be because I figured we wouldn’t have the time or the energy for much else than just making sure the little buggers stayed alive.

After they arrived we started to think a little differently. For one, we decided against the night nurse that we had put on hold. Once they were here, I just couldn’t stand the idea of someone else taking care of them. They were mine and I wanted them to know that I would always be here for them .. no matter how many hours of sleep that took away from me. Also, I was fully aware of how fast they grow up. I knew that all too soon those late night feedings, just a baby and me cuddling in the quiet glow of the nightlight, would be gone. (Of course, I didn’t realize just HOW fast it would go by! Where did these creatures crawling and climbing and talking come from?!) We had some rough nights .. but looking back, David and I wouldn’t change a thing. I LOVE that we had that time together.

I had seriously considered using cloth diapers (yes, they still exist!) at first too. Again, the talk of “TWO babies .. oh my god your doomed” took my focus away.
There were a number of reasons to my thinking:
1) Obviously, the enviromental impact of disposables is staggering .. if you read up on it you’ll be amazed at how awful they are for our landfills. (and an interesting fact .. did you know that even on the disposable instructions they say to dump any solids? Raw sewage should be thrown in with the diapers. All of those diapers entering the landfill are in danger of contaminating the groundwater and spreading disease. ew.)
2) The comfort factor. Seriously, would you rather be wrapped in paper and plastic or cotton and fleece? Yep, I vote for the latter.
3) Financially, if you use cloth diapers from the get go it is sooooo much cheaper. A fact that can sway even the most reluctant dad!
4) Babies who are diapered in cloth tend to have no diaper rash .. which poor little Reese has had a few bouts with .. not fun. They stay much drier in cloth .. which of course goes back to comfort.
Not to mention that in this day and age they have so many styles and brands to choose from .. some of them are really adorable.

SO .. here we are a year later and the other day I remembered that I had considered that at one time. A lot of moms in a group for Atlanta Moms that I belong to use cloth and so after asking them some initial questions, I decided to broach the subject with David. He completely suprised me by being VERY open to the idea. wow. Such a good dad.

We are meeting with a woman from that group tomorrow who has an online store for natural baby products to discuss our questions, concerns, and to see if it may be a good fit for us. I think in the beginning we may try out the whole cloth diaper thing at night (again, because they stay so much drier in them) to see how it works. If we like it, we’ll add a few more diapers to try during the day until we feel comfortable in the whole experience. Ther are so many different diapers, techniques, and accessories that it can be a bit daunting to just jump right in… but I’m so excited that we’re taking the first step. It feels right.

I know that if we ever have a third little one around here, that will be the road we take from day one. I also know that I won’t have to listen to what others tell me to expect from a new baby .. or adding one while already having two here. Everyone’s experience is different .. and we have so been blessed with these two.

Big kid

Kaelin has really gotten into eating finger foods this past week. Spaghetti noodles, green beans, cheese, nectarines, toast, turkey …. it’s a whole new world. She is the most voracious eater I’ve ever seen .. so ready to be a big kid. Her favorite is cheese .. can’t get enough of it.

Reese has been a tad more reluctant. She has taken a few bites of toast and green beans .. but doesn’t quite get why her sister thinks it’s so fabulous. Cheese made her throw up which is her reaction when she thinks something tastes yucky. Great fun. I’m going to try her a milder cheese tomorrow to see if she’s more open to it. Nectarines were a hit. The first taste that she had she looked up at me with those big blue eyes as if to say “Where the heck have you been hiding this stuff?!?!” and started to clap her hands. Very cute.

Our big news of the day is that Kaelin made the sign for “more” three times today. We are very excited. It turns out I’m NOT just using sign language for my own amusement after all (as I was beginning to think). It seems appropriate that her first sign would be for food! She’s such a piglet.

I can’t believe how fast my babies are turning into little girls.

Tuesday, August 8, 2006

So, the other day the girls were watching a video on shapes. Everyone was happy and enjoying the show until Kaelin had a complete meltdown. No idea where it came from, but they have been a bit sick lately so I chalked it up to that. A few days later .. the same thing happened. I realized that it was during the same video so I decided that the next day I would turn it on and watch her carefully. Lo and behold, she freaked out again.

Apparently our little Kaelin is afraid of …. wait for it ……………………wait for it ……………………… TRIANGLES!

What!?!? I swear, only MY kid. When the triangle section comes on she gets visibly agitated and starts shaking her head and whining a bit. Then when a little girl in the video holds a triangle over of her, Kaelin freaks. Screaming, crying .. the whole bit. It happens every time.

Seriously, have you ever heard of such a thing?? A kid that won’t think twice about crawling right off the second story landing or makes a mad dash for any sharp / electrical / or poisonous object… is afraid of a triangle. Is there some trianglephobia resource that I need to be checking into to get her over this? Maybe we should hold back and use them as punishment when she’s older…

okay .. okay ...

Some have complained that I have no pictures of David or myself here on the site .. to be honest, I have very few of me with the girls because I am usually the one behind the camera … but I managed to dig up one. We’ll have to get better about taking some family photos together .. so, more to come.
